Itinerary
3 Days/2 Nights
Day 1
Transfer to your five-star hotel in a beautiful renovated historic building in the heart of Barcelona. Your guide will pick you up in the evening for your walking architecture tour of Barcelona’s Gothic and Moderniste districts. Dinner with the guide in a famous tapas restaurant in the Born area near the port. Your guide is an expert in Barcelona’s architectural history and Spanish gastronomy.
Day 2
Your guide will take you on a walking tour of Barcelona’s gourmet landmarks. Begin with the Mercat de la Boquería, Spain’s largest market. Take in the stands of amazingly fresh fruit and vegetables–most of which comes from the Barcelona region. As you circle the seafood stands look for signs of movement in the mounds of freshly caught shellfish.
Visit the Born-Ribera, one of Barcelona’s classic neighborhoods teeming with gourmet shops, wine bars and places to try exquisite chocolate, traditional turrón, churros in a Milk Bar, modern candy, olive oil until at last we reach one of Barcelona’s leading spots for a wine, cheese and cured sausage tasting. Afterwards you are free for lunch and exploring.
We meet up in the early evening for a walking tour of Barcelona’s famous Paseo de Gracia and parallel sister street the Rambla de Catalunya. Dinner in one of the city’s most renowned Michelin starred restaurants.
Not to miss: Catalonian National Museum of Art (MNAC); Gaudí’s whimsical Parc Guell or the unfinished Sagrada Familia church; the Barri Gòtic and medieval call (Jewish quarter); a stroll down Las Ramblas to the beach; Els Quatre Gats, the legendary café that hosted Picasso’s first exhibition; the Palau de la Música Catalana (architect Domènec i Montaner’s Modernist concert hall and a World Heritage Site).
Day 3
Departure. Private transfer to the airport.
Optional extensions.
Penedès Wine Tour
Your private guide will pick you up at your hotel for a wine tour in the Penedès region near Barcelona. Visit a winery producing red and white wines and some of the best aged vinegar in Spain. Then visit a family run artisanal cava (sparkling wine) producer. Enjoy a traditional lunch and return to Barcelona for dinner on your own.
Two Days in the Catalan Countryside
Day 1
Your next two days will contrast vividly with your time in Barcelona. Barely two hours from the city center you will find yourself in utter tranquility in a medieval village encircled by sunflower fields. Your charming four-star hotel will be the base for your cooking class with the restaurant’s chef, followed by a meal paired with wine with Vicenç. As you share the food and the Spanish wine with chef Vicenç the conversation will go on into the afternoon. After a rest and a walk or bike ride along the quiet country roads, you try the tasting menu in the Restaurant La Plaça, highly regarded for its modern takes on Catalan cuisine.
Day 2
Your specialist guide will pick you up for a day of exploring the medieval villages and the stunning seacoast of the region. The pristine villages that dot the landscape and the former fishing villages sheltered in the coves along the rocky coast are a visual feast. Equally as inviting are the many excellent restaurants and your guide will take you to one near the coast.
Return to Madremanya. Dinner in a nearby modern cuisine restaurant recently awarded one Michelin star.
