Tapas and Vermouth

Our friends at Catavino in Spain recommend another little known tapas bar–this time in Barcelona’s Gracia neighborhood, just above the Eixample. The bar is called Bar Roure and although I have never eaten there, it is on my list for my upcoming trip to Barcelona in June.

I was pleased to read that Vermouth is the drink of choice at Bar Roure. Vermouth is a delight to drink in Spain. I know this will take some convincing because Vermut con sifón–Vermouth with soda water–is not commonly consumed on this side of the Atlantic. Spain historically was one of Europe´s largest producers of Vermouth, and continues to make high quality Vermouth. It’s a bitter herbal wine based aperitif, ranging between 15 and 18% alcohol. Vermouth is served as an aperitif and with casual tapas meals. With the Vermouth and a couple of ice cubes in the glass, you splash a bit of soda water in. It’s a tradition harkening back to the early 20th century since in Spain the soda water comes out of old style seltzer bottles. It is a must try when in Spain.
