Summer in the (Spanish) City

July 14, 2008

Summer in Spain may be synonymous with Mediterranean beaches, but a case can be made for a summer vacation in the city. Spain’s two largest cities, Madrid and Barcelona, offer out-of-doors music, theatre and dance festivals all summer long. The festival concerts and performances take place at night (generally 10:00 PM), giving you an excuse to take that desired siesta after lunch.  Madrid’s Veranos de la Villa running through August, offers international performances of music, theatre, dance, circus arts, and open-air film screenings. Possibilities include Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Zappa Plays Zappa, and Toquinho and Maria Creuza.

Barcelona’s Festival Grec has open-air events across the city, including jazz/Cuban greats like Javier Colina with Pancho Amat, Portuguese Fado singer Mísia, and a number of modern and free jazz ensembles.
